Pietsch's "Reaching and Reading: Family Literacy Outreach Evenings" project encourages and enhances family literacy in the community. The goal is to increase literacy activities in the home in either English or Spanish. Many of the parents are not fluent in English and have limited command of reading and writing in their native language. Through this project, students provide guidance to their parents, model reading, and participate in reading literacy activities. The project incorporates bilingual reading materials and exposes students, teachers and the community to the cultures, experiences and contributions of the Hispanic population.
