The Business and Economics Academy of Milwaukee (BEAM)

Nugent’s innovative program, “Broadcast Student Materials”, was developed to expand the scope and role of the current broadcast at the Business and Economics Academy of Milwaukee (BEAM). For the past nine years, students at BEAM have started each school day with a morning broadcast on BEAM TV. The school has wanted to utilize the broadcast to include curriculum and written student material but due to the lack of studio space and equipment, they have been limited. BEAM is moving into a new location with more studio space and would like to make their dream of expanding the broadcast into a reality. With the funds from the ING grant, students will now have the opportunity to create, write, and produce educational closed-circuit television programming with the purchase of cameras and tripods. During the initial phase of the project, fourth through eighth-grade students will be trained in cinematic production. They will produce and broadcast classroom plays, theatre productions, musical performances, and more. Nugent, who lives in Milwaukee, hopes the project will encourage students to write and submit original programming as well as expose them to technical careers in communications.
