Barr’s and Centeio’s innovative teaching idea, “Around the World in Miniatures,” is designed to increase students’ interest and awareness about the world around them. Miniature settings of locations from a variety of places around the globe will be created to depict other cultures. Students will be able to see a family in their home in Africa or a classroom in China, or even an apartment building in New York City. All of these settings — and many more — will be created using craft materials, wood, glue, and other recycled materials. The learning objectives will be coordinated with each grade level. The early grades will improve language development while the older students will learn about cultures and resources. All details will be accurate and distinctive, while representing various cultures specifically and positively.
