Lynn Middle School
Weinbaum's program, "Through the Lens of Border Children", provides an opportunity for students at Lynn Middle School to celebrate their Mexican-American culture through literature. With most of the students disinterested in reading, Weinbaum saw an opportunity to spark their interest with relevant literary experiences. The three main texts used in the program will analyze border problems, debunk stereotypes, and reflect Mexican-American identities. To expound on the texts, students will interview residents from local homeless and battered women's shelters. Her students will be able to document what they learn through photography, oral histories, and poetry to reflect the pain and the beauty of the border experience. They will share their experiences and promote acceptance of border culture through the culminating student-created photojournalism anthologies to share with the community. Together, Weinbaum and her students will work at promoting acceptance and celebrating the experiences of the border community. Weinbaum resides in Las Cruces.
