Linda Behrens

Behrens' "Heroes and History" is a social studies project in which students in grades 1 through 5 learn about important historical figures or events by composing, singing, and recording original songs about them. A voluntary art contest is held in conjunction with the project to provide student illustrations for the CD cover, tray card, and lyric booklet. The CDs are then distributed to students and various local, state, and government officials. By employing music and songwriting, the project provides a cross-curricular, multidisciplinary experience that provides alternative opportunities for success for the diverse student body and helps bring regular classroom studies to life.
