Raine’s innovative teaching idea, “Dynamic Derby,” will introduce students to automotive engineering and design as they work on developing a gravity-powered mini downhill soapbox derby racer funded in part by the Voya grant. This project combines the tools and values of Soap Box Derby racing with STEM-related (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) disciplines in a hands-on, challenging, and competitive activity. Through participation in this new type of Soap Box Derby, students will also experience many practical, soft skills such as teamwork, communication, innovation / resourcefulness, creativity, critical thinking, problem solving, decision making, resilience, leadership, and sportsmanship that will help them as they transition to the workforce.
