Demarco’s innovative teaching idea, “Dr. Seuss Young Author’s Night,” is focused on empowering students to reach their full potential by connecting curriculum and providing opportunities for them to present their work in an exciting way. Second-grade students will first read science books about animals to learn about their characteristics, while also reading a number of popular Dr. Seuss books to become familiar with his literary work. The second graders will then write and illustrate their own book based on Dr. Seuss's Sleep Book — while using the knowledge they learned about real animals to create a unique animal character in their original work. The students will then create their imaginary animal using clay and other art materials. To conclude the literary project, students will present their book and animal model to classmates, parents, teachers and administrators at the Dr. Seuss Young Author's Night.
