Johnston’s and Daniels’ innovative teaching idea, “Infection Connection,” will integrate literature and science standards in a culminating quarter-long project. Students will investigate bacteria in their learning environment and study the effects of prevention of bacteria by cleaning the areas and testing the areas a second time. Students will fully utilize lab equipment, including microscopes and incubator ovens in a self-directed type of atmosphere. Students will also gain the experience of creating a detailed lab report on their findings. At the same time, students will read the science fiction novel, Fever 1793, to connect them with themes such as mortality, suffering, and science in society. Based on the findings of bacteria in their learning environment, students will also create their own science fiction short story. Not only will students emulate a scientist in a lab, they will have the opportunity to evaluate the implications of dangerous bacteria and the effect it could have on society.
