Vigil's "Natural Helper" program identifies students whom other students turn to for emotional help and teaches them how to more effectively help their friends and foster a safe and supportive school environment. Selected students attend a three-day training session in which they learn about conflict mediation, responsibility, and citizenship. The students are also required to host four major anti-drug activities during the school year. The project gives students a natural network they can turn to in times of trouble and breaks down social barriers between competing middle schools, which means fewer conflicts when the middle school students later attend the same high school.
