Kylie Altier

Altier’s innovative teaching idea, “Teach Your Child How To Read: A Parent Guide,” empowers parents to teach their children how to read. Altier created a 20-minute nightly reading routine that will not only give students essential literacy skills but also a deep connection. With the Voya Unsung Heroes grant, Altier will be able to use the funds to make literacy kits so that learning to read can be free. These kits will contain everything families need to be successful when developing young readers. Foundational reading might not always be described as innovative, but Altier believes there is nothing more innovative than equipping the youngest readers with the tools they need to be the innovation themselves. Altier thinks the power must be shifted into the hands of the children as one looks to the future of education and that the sooner the children can read, the sooner they can wield that power.
