Young's "STREAM: Science Through Research, Exploration, and Mentorship" uses the nearby Tumalo Creek watershed as an outdoor classroom where students study the flora and fauna of freshwater and riparian ecosystems. By examining the animals and plants living within the diverse systems and discovering the wide variety of physical and behavioral traits they share, students gain an understanding of how the ecosystems are interdependent. The project helps students gain hands-on learning experience, develop scientific inquiry skills, become aware of local natural habitats, gain an appreciation of community parks, and promotes leadership opportunities for the older students.
