Kellie Ryan

2010
Atlanta, GA
Fernbank Elementary School

Ryan's winning "Super Science Sleuths: Making Scientific Heroes" program is designed to impact how 580 students look at diseases locally, nationally and internationally and the affect diseases have on social, emotional, and economic environments. The students in grades first through fifth will become dedicated "Disease Detectives". They will be able to identify and interpret the risk factors for health problems, use comparative reasoning to evaluate the risks of health conditions, and apply the scientific method of investigating a disease outbreak to real life situations affecting health. Students will be taught the germ theory of disease and how simple prevention tools can save lives at a local, national and international level. The students will also learn about the direct correlation between the environment and human disease. The students will culminate their lessons by taking their knowledge and findings into the local community to educate their peers in DeKalb County schools. Ryan lives in Decatur.
