Istre's "Vanishing History" is a Community Outreach Project that gives gifted fourth and fifth grade students the opportunity to visit, research and photograph endangered historical sites within their community. This hands-on project allows students to collaborate with local professionals including a historian, photographer, author, reporter, and many others. Students also visit the Genealogy Branch of the library and the Archives Department of the local university to research records and primary sources. Students work as mathematicians, scientists, historians, photographers, detectives, reporters and artists to develop skills needed in the future workplace while also getting a broader sense of the world.
