Kirwin’s innovative teaching idea, “Crossing the Digital Divide” is focused on utilizing netbook computers as an educational tool so that students can develop the skills to access important information as they grow and learn.  Kirwin’s program will help children from kindergarten through fifth grade learn the fundamental operations of these devices. They will obtain experience on how to navigate a variety of databases and programs; develop skills to access information; and design and produce developmentally appropriate digital products using the available databases and software. The projects will become less structured as students gain experience and their skill level develops. Kirwin says her school has a growing number of students who do not speak English at home, so the netbooks also will help these children access electronic books that provide audio support. The same support will be offered to students who need remedial reading instruction.
