"Math to Build Upon" is the winning program Hewins developed to redesign the basic math skills program, allowing students at Macopin Middle School a chance to experience real-life applications of math skills while incorporating new technologies. For example, students will explore surface area and volume relationships in packaging and its impact on the environment. They will also design and build scale models of their architectural designs through software programs such as Google SketchUp. Also, SMART Board interactive whiteboards will be used to bring the lessons to life, which will help transform mathematics lessons into vivid, sensory, interactive experiences for the students. Students will take the foundation skills they learn and build upon them to create a stronger understanding of the importance and usefulness of mathematics in their lives. Hewins lives in Hewitt.
