Kate Grzelak

Grzelak’s winning program idea, “Picture This”, is designed to motivate students to improve writing and communications skills through video production. The fourth- and fifth-grade students will learn methods of video pre-production, production, and post production. Through the partnership between the Cleveland Metropolitan School District and Cleveland State University, the teachers will teach the writing process (pre-writing, drafting, revising, editing and publishing) using the methods employed by video professionals (journaling, brainstorming, treatments, elevator pitches, scriptwriting, and story boarding). Each month, students will learn a pre-production writing process while producing videos in a variety of lengths and genres. Students will then have the opportunity to present their work at a video festival open to the public. Their scripts and videos will eventually make their way to the Internet. Grzelak resides in Avon.
