McCarthy's "Bring the Community Into Your Classroom" project teaches students with learning disabilities to shop, travel, and interact in their community more safely and effectively. Using video-recording equipment, visuals of the community are "captured," so students can view different aspects of the community from the comfort of the classroom. In addition to becoming more familiar with the outside world, students are able to become familiar with their own image in the community through viewing themselves as they participate in community-based activities. Through these activities, students are able to more easily succeed as they encounter unfamiliar situations.
