Ashton Elementary
Ashton Elementary is in the process of developing a new teaching approach and Brousseau's idea, "Math for All Learners," will supplement the school's mathematics efforts by addressing students' individualized learning styles and preferences. The program, which will be available to grades K-5, will involve the development of unit-based folders that can be used in school and at home to help students master real-life math concepts. Folders will be developed based on students' proficiency level and may include customized games, Internet sites, and supporting materials. Folders will also address various modes of learning including working alone, with a peer, or in a group. By engaging students in problem solving and the communication of math concepts at their own pace and target level, students can gain an understanding of math and its application outside the classroom. As part of the program, Brousseau proposed a "Family Math Night" where parents come to school with their child and participate in a "side-by-side" lesson. Additionally, high school students will be recruited to be homework buddies who help students with math concepts and homework assignments. Brousseau resides in Smithfield.
