Kaiya Kaltenborn and Krystal Price

"Audio Snapshots," an oral recording program, is the winning entry from Kaltenborn and Price. All 60 first-grade students at Mt. Spurr Elementary on Elmendorf Air Force Base will be interviewed to give their oral stories about their family, childhood moments, or imaginary tales. Students will answer a series of questions using an audio recorder. Eventually, teachers will help the students translate their stories to paper. The oral stories from the students will be uploaded and posted on class websites for parents and other family members to hear. The overall goals of this program are to foster and enhance writing by recording oral recounts, encouraging family involvement in telling oral stories and capturing moments of childhood experiences, all to increase orally descriptive vocabulary. The educators hope the program will create a sense of personal ownership in the students by removing the sometimes laborious process of writing as they create their personal stories.
