Justin Whitcomb

2014
Montrose, SD
Montrose High School

Whitcomb’s innovative teaching idea, “Montrose Producer Academy,” is designed to establish a professional quality audio recording and production studio at the school. Through this program, students will gain real-world music production experience with industry-standard equipment and software. This experience will equip students with the skills necessary to directly apply their experiences to post-secondary studies, real-world business practices, or both. Whitcomb anticipates that the project can be repeated year after year to involve as many students as possible. By incorporating this project-based learning approach, students' educational experiences will be enhanced. The project integrates principles in music composition and arranging, flexibility and adaptability in technology, practical knowledge of the physics of sound, and time management and workflow concepts. When the course is complete, each student will have real-life experience and a portfolio of hand-crafted music to take with them to their next phase of life.
