Catron's "Science, Math, and Biodynamic Gardening" project helps deaf children develop science and math knowledge by applying the disciplines to planning and cultivating a garden. Initial instruction in agricultural sciences is put to use when students prepare the soil and select the appropriate fruit and vegetable plants. Math skills are used to draw garden plans to scale and to graph plant growth. The hands-on experience of creating and tending the garden reinforces classroom instruction, helps students explore and discover relationships in ecosystems, and builds confidence and interpersonal skills.
