Jordana Scheer

Trenton, NJ
P.J. Hill Elementary School

Scheer’s innovative teaching idea, “Art + Design Studies,” is focused on the study of art history, current artists, as well as the elements and principles of design to inspire greater learning. Through the program, her class will be exposed to the visual arts in the classroom, in galleries and in museums. Scheer believes that exposing young people to a wide variety of perspectives in the art world can strengthen lives in a positive way and provide opportunities for creation, reflection and critique. Voya’s grant will enable Scheer to acquire art supplies, invite guest artists, introduce an art club, visit museums and galleries, and hold an art show that reflects on the students’ own work, their school and the greater community. She hopes this experience will allow students to build on previous knowledge, gain self-respect, and ignite enthusiasm for the arts and education.
