Winkler's winning program idea, "Law & Order: Roman Empire Division," is a full-length simulation of an episode of the popular television show "Law & Order." Assuming the roles of Roman citizens (dressed in togas and tunics), students of different learning abilities will work together to analyze a crime scene and research historical elements of the crime. Each class will then hold a trial/debate to determine the fate of the accused suspect. The process will be recorded and the students, with the help of Winkler, will create a unique hour-long television program that will be shown to the school on a movie screen. Winkler hopes that the program will improve student learning in reading comprehension, library research skills, time management, debating, presentation skills, public speaking, drama and multimedia technology. Students will be able to take pride in the project knowing that they played a role in its creation and can show off their own television show to the community. Winkler lives in Brockton.
