Birdsboro, PA
Daniel Boone Area High School

Oram’s innovative teaching idea, “Build a CNC Router,” is designed to introduce digital fabrication into the classroom that provides a focus on STEM (science, technology, engineering and math). The first part of the project involves taking an existing open source hardware design for a CNC router, computer controlled cutting machine, acquiring the necessary hardware and software, and building the router in the school’s technology laboratory. Students involved with this phase of the project will gain experience in taking a design and fabricating a complicated machine. The project aligns with the school requirement that all students complete an introductory technology education course. Students will walk away with a tangible output based on their design. Ultimately, Oram hopes his project will inspire, motivate, and lead to change within the students and curriculum within the high school.
