Shlesinger’s innovative teaching idea, “It’s a Hatch,” is focused on helping students learn about embryology by hatching chickens. This project benefits students because it introduces them to embryology, but also touches on many other topics. Instead of studying pre-determined lessons from a textbook, this project will allow students to explore their natural curiosity and learn at their own pace. The project focuses on embryology, but it also encompasses life cycles, lab techniques, farming and agriculture, animal care, biology and even engineering. Engineering will come into play by using homemade incubators and other homemade items related to incubation to care for the eggs and hatching chickens. Schlesinger’s idea will enhance the classroom experience because it’s a hands-on project that can accommodate the interest and learning level of each individual student.
