Jo-Ann Mangiarelli

Cranston, RI
Cranston High School West

Mangiarelli’s innovative teaching idea, “Renewable Energy,” is a new hands-on course where students will explore forms of energy, mechanical efficiency and energy conversions. Students will learn about the effects of hydrocarbon consumption and construct various machines such as small wind turbines and small solar panels as well as visit various locations in their community where renewable energy is being used. Mangiarelli says this course is different from other traditional science classes offered at the school that focus on science that has occurred in the past. Her course is focused on the future of energy availability, its affordability and environmental friendliness. Mangiarelli believes that students must be informed, as this global concern will require their ingenuity in order to provide clean, unlimited energy worldwide. Since this is a new course, Voya’s grant will be used to help purchase the necessary wind turbines, solar panels and motors.
