Rincon’s innovative teaching idea, “Access for All,” is designed for K-12 students with special needs to learn how to surf and engage in safe ocean exploration. The project creates a partnership with a local nonprofit surf/beach program to provide surf/water instruction in ways that the students can access at their ability level. Wetsuits and adaptive equipment are provided by surf/beach nonprofit as well as providing safety protocol and instruction in all activities. Together with a team of teachers, developmental specialists and therapists along with nonprofit staff, youth will participate in on the beach and ocean activities that include sand play, ocean play, boogie boarding and surfing. This program will offer a range of physical, sensory, social and emotional benefits for special needs students with various disabilities.
