Harvey Clarke Elementary School
Olson's project couples technology with the core learning areas of reading and writing to help ESL (English as a Second Language) students master the English language. "Cultural Connections Through Technology" is an online pen-pal program connecting teachers and students at Harvey Clarke Elementary to their peers in more than 191 countries via a website: www.epals.com. The goal of the project is for students in kindergarten through fourth grade to become proficient readers, writers and speakers of English. With Olson's guidance, students will establish online relationships with pals around the globe. These global connections will enhance students' understanding of other cultures and geography while increasing their computer and keyboarding experience. Throughout the year, students will exchange letters and digital photos describing their social lives, hobbies and other topics of interest. Reading and writing assessments will be performed periodically to ensure students are on target with their goals. Olson, who lives in Cornelius, believes that this real-world application of skills will help students gain knowledge quicker and enjoy learning more.
