Puryear's "Classical Intervention - ESL Students Read the Classics" project builds reading proficiency among ESL students by having them read classic novels adapted for less-proficient readers. These versions retain the spirit of the originals but use simple, contemporary language with complete language support, supplemented by study guides, vocabulary quizzes, before-reading support, after-reading support, and online help. This brings the students up to the level of typical high school graduates, eases their transition into regular high school English courses, and helps them acquire skills necessary for life and the academics they later encounter in college.
