"Heart to Heart" is the winning program Zapp designed to address childhood obesity at St. Thomas School. Approximately 120 students will benefit from her program where students will learn how their bodies work, especially their hearts, and how they can gain control of their health and fitness. During physical education class, students will learn to use heart rate monitors while exercising to calculate total exercise time; time spent in, above and below their target heart rate; average heart rate; and recovery heart rate. The results of further implementing the "Heart to Heart" program may lead to improved knowledge of the student's body and how it works, how to make significant changes in their health, increased self esteem, and improved cardio-vascular endurance. According to Zapp, who lives in Wilder, the program will motivate students to take responsibility for their own health.
