"Power of One: Learning Through Service" is the winning program created by Pollet and her co-team members Schutt, Schomburg, Link, Shatto, Wilhelm and Hatten. It is a course designed to help students become active members of their community by volunteering for a variety of community-based service projects. They will be required to keep a journal of their experiences and collect digital images of themselves while participating in their projects. They will prepare a reflection document about their service learning experience to showcase the impact giving back had on them. The course will improve student performance and provide a meaningful learning environment for the students. The team of teachers hopes their winning program will foster a positive attitude among teenagers towards volunteerism, increase the numbers of teens volunteering in the community, and provide students worthwhile activities outside the school environment.
