Mendenhall believes many of the factors that cause students to "act out" or disrupt class go far deeper than mere behavioral issues. Oftentimes, these students are labeled as learning disabled and removed from class, when in fact the real problem may be more physiological than intellectual. Mendenhall's project, "Make Every Move Count", proposes to close the gap to this unique educational challenge by incorporating stationary bicycles into the classroom as a way to help kinesthetic learners - including those with ADD/ADHD - curb unruly, disruptive behavior and gain an improved attitude toward learning. Studies indicate that retention and retrieval of information is increased by the accelerated flow of oxygen and glucose to the brain. Repetitive movement boosts brain activity, improves mood and increases learning. The entire student population of 312 children in kindergarten through the fifth grade is expected to benefit from this program, geared specifically toward uncovering learning strengths to improve student achievement, self-esteem and educational aptitude. Mendenhall is a resident of Ponca City.
