Sault Ste. Marie, MI
Sault Area High School and Career Center
With Wicks' project, "Connecting Science to Everyday Life: Water Quality and Applied Engineering Projects," chemistry and physics students will be involved in interactive science studies. In the water quality portion of the project, students will do long-term research on the water quality of nearby watersheds. In their field studies, students will test surface water samples for pH, temperature, conductivity and dissolved oxygen levels. Their results will be shared with the chemistry faculty of Lake Superior State University and county and tribal health departments. In the applied engineering portion of the project, students will build and operate a robot for the school's award-winning FIRST Robotics Team. This will help students understand various concepts, including force and motion. The program is designed to help students gain a better understanding of the real world challenges and experiences faced by environmental scientists and industrial engineers. Wicks is a resident of Sault Ste. Marie.
