Diadhiou's "Sembe" project is named for a short-story, written by Diadhiou, that's used to inspire students to high achievement on standardized tests. Sembe (literally strength or resilience) is an African boy from a small village in Senegal who, despite economic disadvantages and a lack of resources, perseveres to pass challenging tests needed to enter middle school. Using Sembe's story and his resilience and discipline as models, the project guides students through a series of writing and other activities that prepare them for state- and county-wide achievement tests. Available also in French and Spanish, the project promotes other cultures and has a positive impact on participants' self-esteem.
