Menis’ innovative teaching idea, Project Core,” focuses on enhancing her school’s “Project CORE” initiative. Project Core uses a new approach to help students with disabilities to identify feelings, describe their needs and actively participate in their daily routine. The project utilizes technology such as iPads loaded with eye movement or virtual touch to enable students to communicate, despite their physical limitations. This is an enhancement from the traditional use of flashcards and tangible pictures that students relied on to express themselves to others and reduces occurrences where teachers have to correct behavior. Through this project, Menis hopes to excite students about learning while increasing their communications skills.
