Emma Smith
Smith’s innovative teaching idea, “STEM/Makerspace Lab,” will be a first for her school and school district. The program, which focuses on the technology aspect of STEM, will allow students to benefit from hands-on exploratory activities. They will use iPads so students can use coding programs, 3D printing, circuitry, and electronics components to research, learn, plan, document, film, and create. Smith plans to purchase coding programs and robots to expand the students’ understanding of technology. She also hopes that by having a 3D printer, the students can make their ideas become a reality. Another component of the program is to work with students in a STEM club where the emphasis will be on making math fun through play and cooperative group activities for students who may be struggling academically or socially. The goal of the program is to provide the opportunity, tools, and skills for students to become innovative, problem solvers, and future ready.
