Chief Manuelito Middle School

Guliford’s innovative teaching idea, “Chief Manuelito Sculpture,” is designed to be a central part of the eighth grade year-long art class. Students will carve a six-foot pine wood stable sculpture of Chief Manuelito, incorporating core subject such as math, science, history and language arts. Students will learn the correct proportion of human anatomy and the correct measurements of facial features and placement. They will learn about and be exposed to the life of Chief Manuelito. Ultimately, they will learn the mechanics of writing with aesthetics (critiquing finished art work), and describing, analyzing, interpreting and judging the completed stable sculpture. Students will actively participate and take on the challenge to obtain confidence and belief in themselves.
