The Hampton’s innovative teaching idea, “Kindles for Classes,” is designed to provide e-book readers for the English classes at Jonesboro-Hodge High School. Louisiana has recently adopted the Common Core Curriculum, and official textbooks have not yet been adopted. Most of the texts that are being taught are more than 100 years old and are, therefore, public domain. The vast majority of these texts are available for free in a digital format from major, online retailers. Purchasing an e-reader for each student costs approximately one-third of that for a new textbook, which also includes a limited sample of the same texts. These e-book readers will allow for multiple texts of all types, which can be renewed or updated year after year. It also allows schools to purchase digital versions of newer texts at a much deeper discount than can be obtained through purchasing a hard copy of the same text.
