Eugene Field Elementary
In the "Going Batty and Beyond" project, 60 second-grade students will participate in an after-school science and math club with Minor. The year-round project offers different components that build students' math, research, and science application skills. The students from Eugene Field Elementary will visit the Cameron Cave to study bats and build bat houses. The project will also allow them to create their own first aid kits after a visit from paramedics. Students will continue to study animals after visiting the St. Louis Zoo by taking pictures and making scrapbooks of the experience. During the winter months, the second graders will make three different kinds of bird feeders and learn to identify birds common to Northeast Missouri. Finally, the students will conduct consumer surveys and test samples of bottled versus public water to see which type people prefer more. It has been said that the combination of science projects and math lessons and games is of great benefit to the academic development of children and the program seeks to achieve that goal. Minor resides in Hannibal.
