Riter’s “Invention Class” idea will focus on using scientific techniques and principles to create a technological invention that supports a broader Lakota social justice movement. The idea came from a discussion with some of his students who wanted to see if their science fair project could potentially help end the need for pipelines. Riter was excited about seeing the students make an authentic connection between chemistry and Lakota culture and the idea was developed. Students will be connected with Lakota and other Indigenous social justice leaders via video teleconference, gain a deeper understanding of their own values and beliefs, and use design thinking principles to articulate their shared values and the changes they want to see in the world. Riter hopes that by framing science innovation as social justice work, there is the potential to inspire the next generation of Native American STEM leaders and bring about scientific innovations that represent their values and culture.
