Fischer’s and Figy’s creative teaching idea, “Shining Education,” envisions a modular outdoor space to enhance education and the lives of Greenwood Community High School students. Through past cross-curricular projects, the educators have been able to use grant writing, construction and art projects to build a large soil and hydroponic garden. They aim to continue this collaboration by building a modular shelter house. This project will focus on creating a space where special education students can wait for their bus and where classes can use it for outdoor instruction. During the winter months, second-level construction students will install removable walls to allow an extra construction lab. This space will serve as a continuing framework for 3rd-level construction projects, funded by grants written by diet therapy students. These projects will serve to turn the standards into additions to make the space more welcoming to the community. Possible projects include solar panels for charging, a kitchenette and grill for ceremonies, and adaptable seating for alternative needs.
