Moriarty High School
Working with fellow educator Kathy Pitt, Patterson's "Skin Cancer-Ultraviolet Radiation" project educates students about ultraviolet levels in New Mexico and the long-term dangers of ultraviolet exposure. The program helps students avoid becoming a skin cancer statistic by promoting safe sun behavior and raising awareness about cancer prevention techniques. To demonstrate the damaging effects of harsh sunlight, students expose banana peels to ultraviolet light and monitor the reaction. Students also explore the relationship between ultraviolet radiation, skin cancer and cataracts. To raise community awareness, students distribute skin cancer brochures they have created and samples of sunscreen at the Moriarty Invitational Track Meet.
