Kimmel's "Home to Nome: Trail to Understanding" project brings together students of South Carolina and Alaska to promote cross-cultural understanding. Students create "Discovery Boxes" that include videos, art, and writings to share information about states, communities, schools, and themselves. South Carolinian students gain knowledge of Native Alaskan cultures, especially the Athabaskan and Eskimo peoples found in the villages along the Iditarod trail. Likewise, Alaskan students experience the culture and traditions of South Carolina. In the process, data-gathering, mapping, and communication skills are improved.
