Daytona Beach, FL
D. Hinson Middle School

"Sensory Math," the winning program created by Doster and Krenzler, will bring a new focus for learning math to cognitively-delayed students - those who have been identified with an IQ below 50 Multiple and Varying Exceptionalities including down syndrome, autism, and muscular dystrophy at D. Hinson Middle School. The project is designed to teach basic math skills to students so they can be exposed to grade-level mathematics curriculum standards. Participating students will be given multiple engaging opportunities to learn math concepts. Instructors will use the strengths and abilities the students currently have to break down math steps. The use of concrete items and various multi-sensory manipulatives will enhance the students' ability to understand abstract mathematical concepts. The project will introduce and reinforce the meaning of basic number sense concepts. Doster and Krenzler, who live in Port Orange and Ormond Beach respectively, hope that the program will send the students to high school and into the community with helpful, basic math skills.
