Smith and Whitwell Middle School's "Holocaust Project" helps combat the negative influence that growing teen violence has on students. By studying the Holocaust and its implications, students are introduced to cultural diversity and learn the importance of understanding and tolerating people with different beliefs. In addition to increasing historical knowledge, students explore compassion, tolerance, and respect and how to apply them to society's current ills and those of their own school and community. Students also participate in building a memorial to honor Holocaust victims.
