Malay’s innovative teaching idea, “From Sit to Fit,” is designed to address the rising issue of childhood obesity and diabetes by encouraging students to be more active throughout their lives. The project incorporates the use of fitness balls instead of chairs to provide the experience of being active in the classroom. Students will also use pedometers and heart rate monitors to track and analyze their fitness data. With the incorporation of tablets, students will be able to log and assess their fitness data and perform nutritional analysis of the foods they eat. Students will also be able to self-assess their own proper form and technique while performing fitness activities. According to Malay, studies have shown that an active child is more engaged during the school day; they have higher self-esteem; maintain a healthier weight; sleep better; and feel less stressed. Ultimately, the project will enhance the students' experience in the classroom by improving the whole child, which can lead to their overall wellness.
