Marlboro Elementary
Fifth and sixth-graders at Marlboro Elementary take on the job of historians through a community history project created by Holzapfel called "Work in Marlboro". Armed with an interviewer, an audio recorder and a camera operator, students have interviewed up to 30 local townspeople since 2004. Holzapfel aims to provide his students with the drive to be active learners and members of the community, effective communicators, and well-rounded individuals. Each year about 20 students take the tradition of oral history into their neighborhoods. After detailed planning, the interviews are presented to parents, members of the community and other students on a PowerPoint presentation slideshow. Their works are later stored at the Marlboro Historical Society and posted on its website. This project allows the community to unite and learn at the same time about their past, present and future. The students play a large role in preserving that history. Holzapfel resides in Marlboro.
