Johnson’s innovative teaching idea, “Help Save Monarch Butterflies,” is a project-based learning activity to help save and increase the population of Monarch butterflies throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico. The students will be involved in creating and maintaining habitats at the school and in the community; raising and releasing butterflies; tagging Monarchs to be collected after migration in Mexico; and collecting and entering data to assist monitoring of the population. The students will incorporate life sciences, 21st century technology, science inquiry, non-fiction reading, research and written expression. This work and research will have an impact on the population of Monarch butterflies. It also will help students take an interest in the well-being of a living creature, which will make them better world citizens and allow them to make a meaningful contribution to scientific research.
