McDowell’s innovative teaching idea, “STEMify Life Science Classroom,” is designed to engage students in real-world problems to enhance STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) literacy. It will focus on integrating the science and engineering practices of data analysis and modeling into science instruction. McDowell plans to incorporate real-time data collection sensors purchased with the Voya Unsung Heroes grant so students can use technology to plan and conduct investigations, which will enable them to immediately analyze cause-and-effect relationships in their data. Additionally, STEMify will implement interactive models to aid students in visualizing complex biological processes.
