Howard and Shaffer’s innovative teaching idea, “3D Maker Space Printing Lab,” is focused on the creation of a 3D printing lab for all students to use during and after school hours. Students will be taught STEM-based (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) concepts in the classroom using 3D design and printing elements. The lab will help bridge STEM subjects with the arts. Throughout the learning process, the teachers will showcase work, create displays and have students share their different experiences. They also will offer training nights where parents and students can learn together. These special events will promote bonding opportunities between parents and their children. The goal is to engage students while also giving them the guidance and resources to go beyond what they may learn in the classroom setting. By building a 3D printing lab, the two teachers hope to inspire their students, their colleagues and community members in STEM-related fields. This cross-curricular effort will bring many subject areas together and encourage students to think, innovate and become problem solvers who make a difference.
